GM and Avtotor in Kaliningrad signed an agreement today to begin local assembly of the Chevrolet Lacetti. Start of production is planned for the first quarter of 2008. The output of the plant will be about 15,000 Chevrolet Lacettis annually. The cars will be exclusively built for the Russian market.
Today, Avtotor builds Chevrolet Aveo, Lacetti and Epica from pre-assembled component kits in its Kaliningrad facility. With the Lacetti, Avtotor will take on more of the manufacturing responsibility. “Today’s announcement takes our relationship with Avtotor to the next stage. It will allow us to better utilize the investment that Avtotor has made in both its capacity and its high quality workforce in Russia. It also reinforces General Motor’s strategy to have multiple assembly processes in Russia,” said Warren P. Browne, executive-in-charge for GM CIS.
The Chevrolet Lacetti comes to the Russian market in three body styles of which the hatchback and the sedan will be locally assembled. The station wagon will continue to be built from pre-assembled component kits.
