The iconic HUMMER range of vehicles look forward to an exciting 2009, with a range of new models, new powertrains and new initiatives which expand HUMMER appeal to a new range of customers. What hasn’t changed though is the unique style that sets every HUMMER apart on the highway and the legendary capabilities that set it apart in off-road performance too.

One new intiative, led by the HUMMER H2 SUV and H2 SUT is a standard FlexPower capability that will allow them to run on E85 ethanol, gasoline or any combination of the two fuels. E85, which consists of up to 85 percent ethanol mixed with gasoline is a cleaner-burning, higher-octane fuel that can help offset rising demand for oil.

The developments that have enabled the H2 to run on E85 ethanol biofuel blends are already being carried on to other vehicles in the HUMMER line. The H3 will become E85 capable later in 2009 and in addition, a diesel engine is being developed for H3.

HUMMER H2

The iconic HUMMER H2 enters 2009 with new technologies, new interior amenities and standard E85 FlexFuel capability.

The H2 SUV and H2 SUT models are now powered by a 6.2L all-aluminum V8 engine, rated at 293 kW (398 hp) and 574 Nm of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. New for 2009, the engine is calibrated for FlexPower capability, meaning it can run on E85 ethanol, gasoline or any combination of the two fuels.

The 6.2L V8 features performance-optimizing engine technologies include variable valve timing technology to maximize drivability and fuel efficiency. The engine also features lightweight materials, including an aluminum cylinder block, which helps reduce the vehicle's overall mass.

A new six-speed Hydra-Matic 6L80 electronically controlled automatic transmission complements the 6.2L engine and helps deliver an excellent balance of performance and fuel economy. The 6L80 transmission has a "tap up/tap down" capability that allows the driver to manually select upshifts and downshifts with a button on the column shifter.

The H2’s legendary off-road capabilities remain unaltered. The H2 has short overhangs for radical approach and departure angles, along with exceptional ground clearance for minimal impact on trails. Heavy-duty independent front suspension and a five-link rear suspension provide superior handling, carrying and towing capability. These elements help the H2 deliver on HUMMER's mantra of capability, including travelling through streams 609 mm deep, climbing 406-mm steps and rocks and paddling through deep sand or snow.

HUMMER H3

New refinements and a wider product range continues to drive the popularity of the HUMMER H3. The model has spearheaded sales around the world by offering a combination of more compact dimensions and its own unique styling features to the HUMMER brand's iconic shape.

The H3 packs authentic HUMMER style and capability into dimensions appropriate to European driving conditions, allowing H3 to navigate city traffic, yet still deliver HUMMER’s trademark off-road performance when required.

A new powertrain is now offered in addition to the GM Vortec 3.7L, inline five-cylinder engine with dual overhead camshafts and variable valve timing, which delivers 180 kW (245 hp) at 5,600 rpm and 328 Nm of torque at 4,600 rpm. A new 5.3L V-8 powertrain adds an extra dimension in performance and towing capability.

The powerful and efficient V-8 unit is based on GM’s legendary ‘small-block’ engine family. It is rated at 224 kW (305 hp) and 432 Nm of torque. The 5.3L V-8 accelerates the H3 from 0-100 km/h in 8.2 seconds. When towing, the maximum permissible trailer weight is increased to 2268 kilograms.

A Hydra-Matic 4L60 electronically controlled four-speed automatic transmission links the H3 V-8 engine to an electronically controlled four-wheel drive system, which for the 2009 model year features an optional front differential lock to further aid off-road performance. The 3.7L equipped H3 offers the choice of either the Hydra-Matic 4L60 or a smooth-shifting, five-speed manual transmission.
