Vauxhall has been nominated for the "Breaking Barriers Award", which honors the achievements of organizations and individuals in breaking down barriers of discrimination against disabled people.
The "Breaking Barriers Award" is a continuous feature of the European Day of Disabled People - taking place this year on December 3 - which was initiated by the European Commission in collaboration with the European Disability Forum (EDF). More specifically, the award is granted by the Commission and EDF to reward organizations that have developed products, services, systems or environments that follow the "Design for All" approach. The award also highlights the corporate social responsibility that organizations have demonstrated in doing so.
54 organizations from all over Europe have submitted 80 entries for the "Breaking Barriers Award". The jury has now selected 38 final nominees in three categories for the award. The winners of the award will be announced during a ceremony in Brussels on December 3, 2001.
Vauxhall was nominated for its role as the number one supplier of vehicles to disabled people under UK's Motability scheme. Examples of Vauxhall's efforts in the program are: discounts offered to disabled people; a national campaign organized by Vauxhall to raise awareness of the freedom a car can bring to people with disabilities; a dealer network that is acclaimed as the best in the country for service to disabled people, and an interactive Mobility web site that provides helpful advice to disabled people.
In addition, Vauxhall's innovative Zafira people carrier helped the company to achieve the title of Motability Motor Manufacturer of the Year 2000, and that same year, 40,000 of Vauxhall's 296,000 UK sales were to Motability customers.
Nominees for the award are displayed on http://www.eddp.edf-feph.org/edf/award.html, and visitors to the site can cast their vote that will be the basis for an e-user award. Vauxhall's nomination is captured in the category "Home & Daily Living" under "Accessible vehicles".
