In 2001, Opel achieved record sales in Hungary in the second consecutive year. In Hungary, 23.788 vehicles were sold in 2001 exceeding the year 2000 result of 21.544 units by more than ten percent. The key contributors to this success were the Astra Classic and the Astra G leading the pack in the lower midsize category.
The new Corsa also performed well: with more than 4.000 units sold, Opel could double its Corsa sales in Hungary. Opel maintained its number two position on the Hungarian market behind the local producer and GM alliance partner Suzuki. The company maintained its 15 percent market share on the passenger car market and slightly increased its share (from 3.2 to 4%) on the commercial vehicle market.
The Budapest based Opel Southeast Europe (OSE) organization is responsible for Sales, Marketing and Aftersales of Opel vehicles in Hungary and eight other countries in the region (Slovenia, Croatia, Yugoslavia, Macedonia, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Romania and Albania). On these slightly shrinking markets, Opel could maintain its sales volume. Thus, the overall market penetration for Opel in the nine countries served by OSE grew from 8.04 percent in 2000 to 8.3 percent in 2001.
