Opel is Number 1 in Greece

After 16 years, Opel is number one again in the Greek car market, up from fourth position. The Opel Astra has been the best-selling car in the past year, and sales of the Opel Corsa have tripled in 2001.

Opel claimed the Number 1 position in Greece in 2001, up from fourth position last year, returning to the top spot after 16 years. With sales increase of 23.5% in a market that was down 3.4%, passenger car registrations of 29.021 units represent an all-time high record and pushed market share from 8.2% in 2000 to 10.4%.

Again, as in the year before, it was Astra that led the charge, registering a total of 13.049 units, thereby beating strong competition to the finishing line and taking the honors of being the best selling car in Greece.

Corsa also put in very strong performance, with sales taking off and registering a total of 9.440 units vs. 3.800 units the previous year. This enabled this model to nearly triple market share and jump from seventh to third position within its segment, falling only 10 units short of second position.

"Thanks to a professional, well represented dealer network which had aggressively embraced our "Go for Growth" strategy throughout 2001, Opel was able to take advantage of its strong brand perception in Greece, thereby fully exploiting sales opportunities" said John Passadis, Managing Director of Opel Hellas.
