Opel tops the sales statistics in Hungary for the third consecutive month. In January, Opel Southeast Europe sold 1.602 vehicles in Hungary what represents a more than 73% growth compared to the same month of last year. On the passenger car market the Opel volume growth is 70% while on the commercial vehicle front, Opel more than doubled its sales compared to January 2001. The whole Hungarian market also grew, but that growth is less than 30%.
Last year, Opel Southeast Europe, the regional organization for Opel, had all time record sales in Hungary with 23.823 units sold. For 2002, forecasts are lower, but the challenge is there.
Opel has not achieved top ranking in Hungary for three consecutive months since the Astra production phased out in Szentgotthárd, Western Hungary. The "usual" market leader (now second behind Opel) is Suzuki with its locally built and agressively priced Swift and Wagon R+ modells. Renault is coming up strongly and is on the third place mainly due to its low priced Thalia model.
