Saab paint shop emissions reduced by over 60 percent

Highly committed employees and efficient planning have enabled Saab to reduce paint shop emissions by over 60 percent -- without major investments. Saab can now be proud on one of the world's most advanced automotive paint shops.

The goal of Swedish authorities is a 50 percent reduction in emissions of hazardous organic substances (a group which includes solvents) by 2010. Saab, already eight years ahead of schedule, has successfully reduced emissions by 64 percent.

During the 1990's, the debate surrounding solvents and their detrimental effect on the environment raged, sparking Swedish authorities into action. Comprehensive environmental goals were established, one of which called for a substantial reduction of hazardous organic substance emissions. Refusing to invest in purification plants which would consume large amounts of energy and strain the environment, Saab chose instead to attack the problem at its source.

Today, Saab has one of the world's most modern car painting facilities and some of the lowest levels of solvent emissions worldwide. Presently, production generates on average 2.3 kg (5.1 lbs.) per painted car compared with approximately 14 kg (30.9 lbs.) per painted car at the beginning of the 1990's. The limit allowed by the EU is six kg (13.2 lbs.).
