Following the company's strategy to market GM Daewoo vehicles under the Chevrolet brand in several Asian markets, as well as in South and North America GM Daewoo will enter the Romanian market with new range of Chevrolet cars next month.
When GM Daewoo Auto & Technology Co. was established in October 2002, it did not acquire the Daewoo Motor Company plants in Romania and other Eastern European markets but it did agree to supply Daewoo Motor Craiova with component kits until 2005.
The cars built at the "old company" plants are sold under the Daewoo brand name in the local market. In order to differentiate its own product offer, GM Daewoo will sell its Korean-built product range using the sister-brand Chevrolet. Chevrolet cars sold in Romania will have the same model names (Kalos, Nubira and Evanda) as their Daewoo counterparts in Hungary, the Czech and Slovak Republics as well as in Western Europe.
Car sales will start in the first half of October through six authorized dealers, with two of them present or former retailers of Daewoo Motor Co. The plan is to have around 15 Chevrolet dealers in the country by the end of next year and in the mid-term reach a total numbers of 20 to 25 dealers.
"With the start of Chevrolet sales in this country, GM Daewoo will offer customers attractive design, proven technology and outstanding value for money. We plan to establish a quality dealer network which will provide high levels of service." said Andy Dunstan, GM's Operations Director for Southeast Europe.
In Romania, GM Daewoo will initially offer a model range consisting of three cars, all of which are less than a year old. The Chevrolet Kalos is available in both five and four door body versions with three different gasoline engines, the 1.2 SOHC with 53 kW/72 kW/hp, the 1.4 SOHC (61/83 kW/hp) and the 1.4 16V with double overhead camshaft and an output of 69 kW/94 hp. The Chevrolet Nubira comes with 1.6 and 1.8-liter, 16-valve engines while the top-of-the-line Chevrolet Evanda will be offered with a powerful 2.0-liter, 16-valve engine. These models will be presented on the Chevrolet stand at the Bucharest Motor Show. The Tacuma, the Chevrolet offer in the monocab segment will be marketed as of January next year, while the brand new Lacetti will have its pan-European debut in spring 2004.
