Three Opels score points in DTM race at Nürburgring
On Sunday at the sold-out Nürburgring, Opel achieved one of its best results in the 2004 DTM season with three of the Vectra GTS V8 models finishing in the point-paying positions. Opel driver Marcel Fässler missed podium finish by just one second, and ranked fourth.
In Saturday’s qualifying, Peter Dumbreck was again the top driver of the Opel team with the fourth fastest time. Marcel Fässler and Timo Scheider on ranks six and seven completed the good result.
Thanks to an excellent start on Sunday, Dumbreck climbed up to second place in the first lap. After having been overtaken by Audi driver Mattias Ekström, he defended his third place. Dumbreck’s hope for a podium finish was destroyed when he lost much time during the first pit stop.
Starting from sixth position, Marcel Fässler showed a great performance and fought till the final lap to reach third place. He missed the podium place by only 1.1 second and finished fourth.
Scheider on sixth, Dumbreck on eighth and Laurent Aiello on ninth place helped to reach a good overall result. Mercedes driver Gary Paffett won the race ahead of Mattias Ekström.
A total of 103,000 people attended the three-day event.
