1.3 CDTI ECOTEC named “Engine of the Year 2005”
The state-of-the-art 1.3 CDTI common-rail turbo-diesel unit from the ECOTEC engine family has been named “Engine of the Year 2005”. The “International Engine of the Year Award” jury, which consists of motoring journalists from 26 countries, chose the compact engine developed by the former Fiat-GM Powertrain joint venture as the winner in the 1.0 to 1.4-liter displacement class.
The power plant’s exceptional range and innovative technology impressed the jury, who cited the 1.3 CDTI’s smooth performance, high refinement and exemplary economy as the main reasons for naming it “Engine of the Year”. Thanks to its clever design, the diesel unit proved itself superior not only to gasoline engines, but also to hydrid concepts from competitors.
Opel offers the 1.3 CDTI unit with two power outputs: The 51 kW/70 hp version has a maximum torque of 170 Nm and is available in the Agila, Corsa, Combo and Tigra TwinTop model ranges, while the 66 kW/90 hp variant, with variable turbocharger geometry, provides high torque (200 Nm) and low consumption in the Astra, Astra station wagon and Astra GTC.
